Porsche 968 Club Sport (CS) Introduction

1993 Porsche launched a trackday prepared purist’s version of the 968 called 968 Club Sport (CS). The car was a lightweight sport version weighing 50kg’s less than the standard 968. It was trimmed to this lower weight by applying a diet to the standard 968.

On the exterior, the rear wiper was removed. In the interior electric windows and mirrors were replaced by lighter manual versions, the rear seats including the trunk cover and electric opener for the rear hatch were removed. In addition, some of the sound-deadening material, the airbags, cassette holder and the car alarm also were eliminated.

In the engine bay some covers were deleted and the heavy battery was replaced by a lightweight version.

The CS was lowered 20mm’s by using another set of springs on the front and adjusting the sway bars on the rear.

The CS was available with bucket seats from the factory and also as a comfort option retaining the same seats from the base model 968.

For the UK market only Porsche produced a special version called 968 Sport in 1994 and 1995 which was based on the CS but some comfort features were returned from the Standard 968.

Due to the removal of all the luxury equipment the 968 Club Sport was considerably less expensive than the standard 968. Insiders state that the lower priced CS was used to stimulate the initially moderate sales of the Standard 968.

Nowadays the purist 968 CS version is very popular and prices represent the opposite compared to Porsche’s price policy back in the 90’s. CS versions have become more expensive than the Standard 968’s. Especially 968 CS’s with the options M030 (upgraded suspension and brakes) and M220 (limited slip differential) are in great demand. Clean unmodified and less accident damage examples are getting very rare.
