Cayenne is Porsche's first SUV. Named for the spicy pepper, this 5-passenger, all-wheel-drive unibody wagon shares its basic design with Volkswagen's new Touareg SUV. However the Cayenne is more expensive than Touareg and has its own engines and styling. It uses a 4.5-liter V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability via steering-wheel buttons or console lever. Cayenne's AWD system is designed for severe off-road use and has low-range gearing and a locking center differential. ABS and antiskid/traction control are standard.
A Volkswagen sourced 3.6litre V6 provides the basic foundations for the entry level model Cayenne providing ample power for everyday conditions.
The new engine can deliver 216 kW, modifications in the exhaust manifold allow the engine to peak at 6700 rpm. The 17 inch alloy wheels (smallest in the Cayenne line up) contributes to the car being slightly softer on the road assisting the luxury requirements for this type of vehicle. The interior is much more basic inside and this has always questioned the feasibility of the price tag for this type of luxury vehicle.
Optional on S and standard on the Turbo is a self-leveling air suspension with six driver-adjustable heights, including 10.7 inches of off-road clearance. Towing capacity is 7716 lb. Leather upholstery and 17 inch wheels are standard on the entry level model; 19s and 20s were optional.
