Porsche Boxster (987)

Introduction to the Porsche Boxster (987)

After the very successful introduction of the 986 Boxster, Porsche introduced its successor in 2005. For the second generation Porsche applied many evolutionary changes to much of the car. The styling was subtly tweaked for a sleeker look now allowing clear distinction from the 911 models and the quality and look of the interior was improved.

The 987 Boxster was available in the base version or in the more powerful Boxster S version. The base model still featured a watercooled 2.7litre flat-six mid-engine rated at 240bhp @ 6400rpm and 270Nm @ 4700rpm. The Boxster S was upgraded with a 3.4litre version of the 986 “S” engine (an additional 0.2litre of displacement) producing 280 hp @ 6200rpm and 320NM @ 4700rpm. The power is transmitted via a manual or automatic 6-speed transmission. The standard equipment on both models is respectable but most Boxsters are usually equipped with a fair number of additional options elevating the price rather quickly.

Inside, the quality of materials used has improved over the years and late-model Boxsters certainly are able to project the aura of a premium sports car. With two ample cargo holds in the front and rear (thanks to the mid-engine setup) and its easy handling, the Boxster is a very good daily driver, too.

With the Model Year 2007 the Boxster (987.310) and Boxster S (987.320) were upgraded with the engine from the respective Cayman model increasing the power to 245bhp @ 6500rpm / 273Nm @ 4600rpm for the Boxster and 295bhp @ 6250rpm / 340Nm @ 4400rpm for the Boxster S. Performance figures recorded new were 6.1 seconds 0-100km/h and 258km/h top speed for the Boxster and 5.4 seconds 0-100km/h and 272km/h top speed for the Boxster S.

After a decade in production, the classically styled Porsche Boxster still remains a serious, purpose built mid-engine sports car designed to be a perfect allrounder and probably the best compromise available on the Roadster market.
