The first generation Porsche Boxsters (Porsche 986) originally debuted for the 1997 model year and were considered to be a key release for the brand. Porsche had been struggling financially through the early and mid 90s and besides other revolutionary changes within Porsches strategy the Boxster was contributing considerably to a successful commercial turnaround thanks to its affordability (base model 39,000 euros), classic styling and simplicity that made it a huge hit with consumers. The majority of Boxsters was not produced in Germany but in Finland.
The first generation Porsche Boxster featured a power operated soft top and a 2.5litre watercooled flat-6 engine providing 204bhp @ 6000rpm and 245Nm @ 4500rpm. In 2000, a more focused “Sport” model was introduced. The Porsche Boxster S was upgraded with a 3.2litre powerplant producing 252bhp @ 6250rpm and 305 Nm @ 4500rpm, larger wheels and brakes and a more stiffly tuned suspension. At the same time, the base model engine was revised now featuring 2.7 liter displacement and 220bhp @ 6400rpm and 260Nm @ 4750rpm.
In 2001, the improvements mostly involved interior refinements in layout and materials quality. Underneath, the sophisticated Porsche Stability Management system was made available for both models. For 2004, Porsche increased the power output of both engines slightly 228bhp (Boxster) and 260bhp (Boxster S).
The driving characteristics and performance of the Boxster S (5.7s 0-100km/h and 265km/h top speed) combined with it’s easy but precise handling and best daily-driveability make it one of the best choices for everybody looking for the perfect roadster in the upper market segment.
