The 996 GT3 RSR released in 2004 and was the ultimate evolution of the 996 GT3 based racing cars. The engine power was increased to 445bhp @ 8250rpm and 405 Nm @ 7200rpm. This was achieved by using new pistons and rods as well as a completely reworked valve gear. The main focus of the optimization was not on power but on further improved driveability and durability. Besides these engine internals a newly designed air intake which generated increased ram pressure and prevented hot air from the engine periphery entering the combustion chambers was implemented.
Also the powertrain underwent important modifications, finally a sequential gearbox with fuel cut off for rapid gearchanges was introduced making the GT3 race car an even more competitive and driver friendly endurance racing car. The exterior of the GT3 RSR also received a modified front-end which further improved downforce at the front axle compared to its predecessor.
The six-point safety belt and racing bucket seat underwent modifications in order to integrate the Head and Neck Support System (HANS), which helps prevent head and neck injuries and became mandatory in the FIA GT Championship for 2004.
Still weighing 1100kg (FIA specification) or 1115 kg (ACO-spec) the 911 GT3 RSR was sitting at the minimum weight limit.
Also the 996 GT3 RSR followed the reputation of its predecessors:
2004: 1st place 24h Le Mans, ALMS, FIA GT, LMSeries, 3rd place 24hr Nürburgring
2005: 1st place 24h Le Mans, ALMS, FIA GT, LMSeries, 4rd place 24hr Nürburgring
2006: 1st place ALMS, FIA GT, 24 h Nürburgring, LMSeries, 2nd place 24hr Le Mans, 7th place FIA GT
