With the introduction of the Carrera “S” models Porsche initiated a tradition (carried on until today) of producing Carrera models with rich standard equipment.
The Carrera S models may be considered as a crossbreed between the 993 Carrera and the 993 Turbo: The all-wheel drive Carrera 4S (1996) and the later rear-wheel drive Carrera S (1997) shared the Turbo’s bodyshell (except the large fixed rear spoiler of the turbo) featuring a 6cm widened rear end and standard 18inch wheels.
The Carrera 4 S additionally was equipped with the suspension components and the famous “Big Red” brake system of the 993 turbo and therefore is often described as “Turbo without the turbocharged engine and the wing”. It included numerous options of the Carrera / Carrera 4 as standard equipment (AC, On-board computer, full leather equipment, electric seats, audio package etc).
The Carrera S was in all aspects a standard Carrera “underneath” as the rear track width was adapted to the wider fenders by simply adding some 31mm spacers to each side. The Carrera S was equipped neither with the Turbo suspension system nor its “Big Reds”.
It may be distinguished from the Carrera 4S by its rear badge and even better its characteristic split design engine cover / spoiler.
A total of 3652 Carrera 4S and 4453 Carrera S were built in 1997 and 1998. The 993 S models are widely acclaimed for its rear looks and due to the relatively low production numbers they already are very popular collectors cars constantly gaining value.
