Various turbo versions of the 964 were built: the 964 Turbo I, the 964 Turbo 3.6 (Turbo II) and the 964 Turbo S.
The 964 Turbo I was the successor of the famous Porsche 930. Its design featured a combination of the new design of the 964 and the widebody concept of the 930.
Also the big fixed rear wing of the 930 was carried on to the new design in order to allow proper fitment and ventilation of the large intercooler. Porsche did not have sufficient time to finish development of a turbocharged version of the M64 3.6 litre engine, so a modified version of the aircooled 3.3 litre flat-six with one large turbocharger donated by the 930 had to be used. These minor modifications made the engine smoother and less prone to turbo lag and resulted in a slightly higher power output of 320bhp @ 5750rpm and 450NM @ 4400rpm. From a standstill to 100km/h the 964 Turbo I required 5.0s and had a top-speed of 260km/h. Many enthusiasts were disappointed by the new 911 Turbo as the predecessor 930 nearly performed equal. The Turbo I was built from 1991 on and 3660 units were sold.
Porsche made good for this disappointment when introducing the 964 Turbo 3.6 (Turbo II) in 1994. This second version featured the turbocharged version of the 3.6 litre M64 engine. The additional 0.3 litre of displacement leveled the power up to 360bhp @ 5500rpm and 520Nm @ 4200rpm. The Turbo 3.6 performed very well and completed the sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 4.8s and reached a top speed of 280km/h. It was built in a limited edition of 1436 units in 1994 only and has become a very popular collectors car.
In addition to the Turbo 3.6, Porsche introduced the 964 Turbo S in 1994. Featuring an improved version of the 3.3 litre engine of the Turbo I (381 bhp @ 6000rpm and 490Nm @ 4800rpm) and a serious weight reduction program lowering the weight to 1290kg (Turbo I and Turbo 3.6 both weighed 1470kg) the Turbo S was a serious performer doing the standard sprint in 4.7s and reaching a top speed of an impressive 290km/h. Only 86 Turbo S were built and the price of 295’000 DM wasn’t for the faint hearted.
